What is a Shaliach?
A shaliach or Shliacha (Israel emissary) are young Israelis recruited
by the Jewish Agency for Israel, usually in their 20's volunteering
to live with Jewish congregations all over the world, and share their
knowledge and love for Israel and the Jewish religion. The Shaliach’s
job is to be exactly where needed- at Friday night service, on Sunday
school or in the public schools, visiting Jewish families and the
non Jewish communities, all with one purpose- to give assistance in
any form possible, to learn and to enrich, in all that questioned
about Israel, our homeland, and about Judaism, our faith and legacy.
While the Shaliach is here, your community becomes a part of his life,
he'll make sure Israel becomes a part of yours.
Who am I and what am I doing here?
My name is Assaf Grumberg, I’m 26 years old, Born and raised
in Israel. Before coming to Southern Illinois I was a student at
Tel Aviv university for economics and Business management. Prior
to my studies I serves in the IDF for 5.5 years as an officer. I
decided to become a Shaliach because I feel that due to social and
economic difficulties, the phenomenon of assimilation among young
Jews is growing while Jewish identity and identification with Israel
is weakening. I wish to take part in strengthening the connection
between the Jewish world and Israel. I made it one of my goals to
connect and enrich any person in our federation who chooses to take
part in my programs, no matter how far away the may be.
